Assistant Principal's Message

I am excited to serve Sculptor’s students, faculty, staff, and parents as the Assistant Principal. I absolutely love this school; it is really like an extended family.

I originally hail from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s REALLY cold there in the winter, so two weeks after I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, I moved to Merritt Island. Freshly armed with my college diploma (my bachelor’s degree is in Speech Communication/Business Management), I had grandiose dreams of becoming rich and successful. I eagerly started my first job, certain it would lead to the fulfillment of my dreams. Unfortunately, I was working for a not-for-profit corporation, Junior Achievement. While I didn’t become wealthy, I did have my first experiences working with students and being in the classroom through this job. It was wonderful to work for this company. However, buying groceries was important to me, so I decided to find a more lucrative position.

Career wise, I spent several years working for two of the hospitals in Brevard County. I also spent eight years working for a CPA firm. During this time, my mother, who is a teacher, started dropping hints about how wonderful it was to be a teacher. She told me I would love working with the children (summers off!), that seeing a child’s face light up when he/she grasps a concept is very rewarding (summers off!), and that the feeling I would get knowing I was making a difference in children’s lives was incredible (SUMMERS OFF!!). Eventually, I saw the light and decided to go back to school to become a teacher myself. It was one of the best decisions I ever made!

I graduated from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 1998 with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. I taught 3rd grade at Golfview Elementary in Rockledge for two years. In 2000, I began teaching Kindergarten at Sculptor and in 2002, was selected at Sculptor’s Teacher of the Year. In 2003, I was selected as one of eight finalists for Brevard Public Schools Teacher of the Year. I am certified in Educational Leadership, Primary Education, and Elementary Education.

I am blessed to have three children and one granddaughter. Elizabeth and Jason are both graduates of Sculptor. Colleen is in her last year of middle school here at Sculptor. In my spare time, what little there is of it, I love to read and sing.

Again, I am very excited to work with Mrs. O’Sullivan, the faculty and staff, and our Sculptor parents as we strive to create the best learning opportunities available for our children. Together, we will make a difference!

Sincerely,

Reneé Bernhard
